Raptor Mascot Out For The Season

One of the most important members of the Toronto Raptors basketball team is injured and won’t be participating this season.

It’s the “Raptor,” the team’s mascot.

Many people think the Raptor–with his athletic moves, edgy attitude and fun-loving spirit–is one of the best mascots in the NBA. Perhaps even professional sports.

He tore his Achilles tendon during a school visit in Halifax before the basketball season started.

People have an emotional reaction to the Raptor mascot–whoever he/she is.

The coach’s daughter cried when she heard the news of his/her injury.

Toronto Landmark, Honest Ed’s, Has Been Sold

A Toronto landmark has been sold to a builder in Vancouver.

Honest Ed’s discount store, at the corner of Bloor and Bathurst, will close down in two to three years.

Since 1948, the store has grown to take up almost a whole block.

Over the years, the decorations all over the building have become more and more extravagant.

The public can see the store’s neon signs and colourful lights from two blocks away.

The founder of Honest Ed’s was Ed Mirvish.

Cardinals Win Game Three In World Series After Rare Call By Umpires

On Saturday night, something unexpected happened in an important baseball game.

The St. Louis Cardinals were playing against the Boston Red Sox in the World Series.

The World Series is a best-of-seven series. That means the first team to win four games wins the World Series and is named the best major-league baseball team of the year.

The games are always filled with tension and excitement, but Saturday’s game—game three—had a bit more of both.

It was the bottom of the ninth inning.

The game was tied 4-4.

It was the last chance for the Cardinals to score a point. If they did, they would win the game.

What happened next was very exciting.

Future King Of England, Baby Prince George, Christened

The tiny heir to Britain’s throne had a big milestone event this week.

Prince George had his christening.

In this case, a christening is a religious Christian ceremony during which a baby is baptized with holy water.

The water used in the ceremony was from the River Jordan. The river has significance to Christians because it is where Jesus was baptized, according to the Bible.

The three-month-old son of Prince William and Kate Middleton is third in line to the British throne. In other words, he could one day be the King of England.

The ceremony took place in St. James’s Palace in England.

There were only 22 people at the christening, but they included some pretty big names.

The Queen was there, as well as the three other people who are next in line to claim her throne.

Rare Five-Metre-Long Oarfish Discovered In California

A marine biologist, who was snorkelling off the coast of California, has made a fantastic discovery.

Jasmine Santana found a dead oarfish so long that she needed 15 people to help her drag it out of the ocean.

Santana works for the Catalina Island Marine Institute. She was snorkling when she saw something shimmering.

It was the body of an oarfish. But it wasn’t just any oarfish–this one was more than five metres (18 feet) long.

Oarfish are plankton-eaters. They are rarely seen by humans, because they live deep in the ocean–up to 1,000 metres down.

They are long, like a “sea serpent.” In fact, oarfish may have been the mythical sea serpents of legend.

Canadian Cheese “Best In The World”

Recently, a Canadian cheese was given the title “Supreme Global Champion” at the Global Cheese Awards in England.

Margaret Peters entered her cheese, called Lankaaster, in the competition. Peters owns Glengarry Cheesemaking and Dairy Supply Ltd. in Lancaster, Ont.

It took the top prize, beating every contender in 167 categories.

Lankaaster was described this way, by the Globe and Mail’s cheese columnist, Sue Riedl:

The Lankaaster has “notes of caramel, butterscotch, pineapple and butter that linger on the palate.”

Cheerleader Fined In London, Ont. For… Cheering

Normally, some cheerleaders going down a street cheering before a big football game wouldn’t be a problem.

Unfortunately for the squad, they were cheering in an area where police were cracking down on excess noise.

Several dozen cheerleaders were cheering for their team, the University of Western Ontario Mustangs, in London, Ont.

They were chanting “Go ‘Stangs, Go” and throwing one cheerleader up into the air.

It was right before a big homecoming football game against the Queen’s University Golden Gaels.

Police in London, Ont. have a “liquor enforcement and reduction of noise” program called “Project LEARN.”

Chris Hadfield Inspires Thousands Of Students At Freedom Day Celebration

Thousands of middle-school students converged on Yonge-Dundas Square in downtown Toronto on Wednesday to celebrate Freedom Day.

The annual event was hosted by the Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies.

Speakers ranged from holocaust survivor Max Eisen to dance troupe SolePower, and culminated in an inspirational speech from former Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.

Max Eisen talked about surviving a concentration camp.

“When I was in Auschwitz, trying to survive on 300 calories a day,” he said, “I thought of two things: food and freedom.”

The downtown square was packed with students, who sat cross-legged under a blazing sun, shoulder to shoulder, to listen to the speakers.

Toronto Zoo Elephants Prepare For Trip To California

For two years, the Toronto Zoo and Toronto City Council have been trying to agree on the best way to move three senior elephants to California.

The elephants are quite old and must be treated very carefully.

Now, if all goes well, Toka, Thika and Iringa will begin their trip next month.

At first, they were to make the move by plane, but that idea was turned down in favour of driving.

Now they will go in containers on a 50-hour journey with several stops along the way for feeding and cleaning of the crates.

Veterinarians and handlers will go with them on the trip to make sure the animals are safe and not stressed.

The National Football League… Expect the Unexpected

The NFL (National Football League) is in full swing and many exciting stories have already begun to unfold.

Although the league opened just three weeks ago, teams have already surprised their fans, for better and for worse.

Seven of the 32 teams in the league are now 3-0 (3 wins – no losses).

But it may not be the teams you would expect.

Favourites such as The Seattle Seahawks, The Denver Broncos and The New England Patriots are 3-0, but so are The Kansas City Chiefs, The Miami Dolphins, The Chicago Bears, and The New Orleans Saints—four teams that didn’t even make the playoffs last year.
