It’s official. Canada produces the best cheese in the world.
Recently, a Canadian cheese was given the title “Supreme Global Champion” at the Global Cheese Awards in England.
Margaret Peters entered her cheese, called Lankaaster, in the competition. Peters owns Glengarry Cheesemaking and Dairy Supply Ltd. in Lancaster, Ont.
It took the top prize, beating every contender in 167 categories.
Lankaaster was described this way, by the Globe and Mail‘s cheese columnist, Sue Riedl:
The Lankaaster has “notes of caramel, butterscotch, pineapple and butter that linger on the palate.”
That’s a fancy – and wonderful – way of saying that it tastes like a delicious, smooth cheese, but if you keep tasting it, you can sense other tastes (which aren’t actually in the cheese) that enhance it, like butterscotch and pineapple.
Margaret Peters told the Globe, “You eat a piece of it and you want to go in a closet alone and keep eating it. It is a cheese that you will never forget the taste of.”
One of the things that gives the Lankaaster its superb texture and taste, is aging. The cheese sat in a temperature-controlled aging room to “ripen” for more than two years.
How much will you have to pay for a piece of Lankaaster? Well, if you want to make a grilled cheese with it (which is recommended, by the way) you’ll have to fork over about nine dollars. That’ll get you 150 grams. (By comparison, a medium cheddar cheese would cost you less than half as much.)
If you want to buy some Lankaaster, you can get it from Glengarry or Toronto’s Cheese Boutique, which just received a shipment of it yesterday. But you’d better hurry, because “the best cheese in the world” is selling like hotcakes.
