The “Voice Of The Blue Jays” Wins Prestigious Award

Grown men have been known to tear up upon hearing the famous words: “Touch ’em all, Joe!”

They were spoken by Blue Jays’ baseball radio broadcaster Tom Cheek back in 1993.

Recently, the Baseball Hall of Fame announced that the “voice of the Blue Jays” would receive the prestigious Ford C. Frick award for broadcasting excellence.

Many fans consider the award long overdue.

Cheek was part of the first Blue Jays radio broadcast. He continued to be the voice of the Blue Jays for 27 years.

From his first game to his last, he never missed a game. He worked 4,306 games in a row–from April 1977 until June 2004.

Cheek also broadcast 41 playoff games.

Cheek experienced struggles in his early years.

He was also witness to back-to-back World Series championships for the Blue Jays in 1992 and 1993.

But topping it all was the call he made in 1993.

Blue Jays outfielder Joe Carter had just hit a huge home run to win the World Series.

Skier Lindsey Vonn continues to dominate her sport.

Vonn, is an American ski racer with the United States ski team. She recently had a great weekend in Canada. She raced at Lake Louise in Banff, Alberta.

She ended up winning all three races that were held that weekend.

Vonn earned her 14th career win at Lake Louise.

A Celebration Of Canadian Football

On Sunday night, Canada celebrated a great game and a big anniversary.

It was the 100th anniversary of the football championship that decides who takes the most important prize in the Canadian Football League — the Grey Cup.

Across the country, and all over Toronto, Canadians were cheering for the Toronto Argonauts or the Calgary Stampeders.

At noon on Sunday, fans converged on Varsity Stadium in downtown Toronto for a “fan march,” a big parade of Canadian football fans.

The Argos’ mascot, Jason, bounced around the crowd giving people high-fives.

The Stampeders’ mascot, Ralph, made his way through the mostly Toronto crowd.

But it didn’t matter who you were rooting for–the real celebration was about the game itself.

“The only play is the next play,” the coach for the Argos told his team before the big game.

At the same time, in the other dressing room, the coach for the Stampeders reminded his team that, “one word — team — is why we’re here.”

Canada Gets Grey Cup Fever, Toronto Hotel Gets A Visit From A Horse

Excitement is building as Canadians everywhere are getting Grey Cup fever.

The fever is particularly high in Toronto. Not only will the game be played there, but the Toronto Argonauts are one of the teams vying for the championship.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup championship, which decides which Canadian Football League (CFL) team is the best.

It is played between the winners of the CFL’s East and West Divisional playoffs.

The Toronto Argonauts are set to play the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday.

The winner will take home the trophy known as The Grey Cup.

Toronto was the site for the first Grey Cup, back in 1912.

The 2012 game will also be played in Toronto, at the Rogers Centre.

It’s unusual for the city hosting the Grey Cup to also have their team playing in the Grey Cup.

The last time Toronto won the Grey Cup while playing at home was in 1952.

Proposed Blockbuster Trade Could Put Blue Jays In Contention For World Series

The Toronto Blue Jays stunned and excited their fans last week when rumours surfaced about a blockbuster player trade.

The trade is not finalized yet, and it still has to be approved by the Commissioner of Baseball.

If the trade goes through it would be, arguably, the biggest trade in Blue Jays’ history.

Twelve players are involved: seven going from the Blue Jays to the Miami Marlins and five going from the Marlins to the Blue Jays.

Toronto Mayor In Another Unusual Situation

Toronto’s mayor, Rob Ford, is in the middle of another controversy.

It happened last week. He was on the field with the high school football team he coaches, the Don Bosco Eagles.

The coach of the other team got into a confrontation with the referee.

Police were called in to deal with the situation.

That’s where the situation gets confusing.

The police called the Toronto Transit Commission. Police asked the TTC to send a bus to the field to pick up Ford’s team.

Unfortunately, that meant kicking passengers off two buses—stranding them in the rain—and sending those then-empty buses to the field to pick up the high school football team.

The mayor said when the buses didn’t show up promptly, he called the head of the TTC and left him a message.

SF Giants Win The World Series

For the second time in three years, the San Francisco Giants are baseball’s World Series Champions.

The Giants beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 in 10 innings. They completed a four-game sweep in the best-of-seven series.

That means they won four games in a row, which gave them the championship.

Former Toronto Blue Jay Marco Scutaro singled home the go ahead run in the 10th inning with two out.

Pablo Sandoval (a.k.a. Kung Fu Panda) was awarded Most Valuable Player (MVP).

That’s because in game one of the World Series he hit an amazing three home runs and, overall, he had eight hits in 16 at-bats.

A Giant Panda Makes His Mark On Baseball

He’s a giant among Giants, and now his name will forever be in baseball’s record books.

Wednesday night was the first game in this year’s World Series. The World Series is the annual championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Since 1903, the World Series has been the big, end-of-season battle between the best teams from the American League and National League.

This year the Detroit Tigers of the American League are playing the San Francisco Giants of the National League.

In game one on Wednesday night, history was made. The Giants beat the Tigers and their impressive pitcher, Justin Verlander.

The Giants won 8-3. They took a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-seven series.

The highlight of the night, however, was made by the Giants’s heavy-hitting third baseman, Pablo Sandoval.

Sandoval was born in Venezuela. He is affectionately known to his teammates as Kung Fu Panda.

World Renowned Cyclist Lance Armstrong Cheated, Erased From Record Books

Lance Armstrong “has no place in cycling,” the president of the governing body for cycling said this week.

And with those words, the organization took away Armstrong’s seven Tour de France victories. They also banned him for life from competing in cycling.

Even though Armstrong came in first in those races, he used banned performance enhancing drugs to help him compete and win races.

So the International Cycling Union (UCI) is erasing him from the sport’s history books.
