Skier Lindsey Vonn continues to dominate her sport.

Vonn, is an American ski racer with the United States ski team. She recently had a great weekend in Canada. She raced at Lake Louise in Banff, Alberta.

She ended up winning all three races that were held that weekend.

Vonn earned her 14th career win at Lake Louise.

She swept three races last year as well. She becomes the first skier in history to win three World Cup races at the same location in two different seasons.

Vonn has seven straight wins at Lake Louise, so she has also broken the record for consecutive World Cup wins at one location.

The wins this weekend gave her 56 in total. She is now in second place on the all-time women’s win list for her sport.

The next record that Vonn may break is the most World Cup victories; she will need 63.

Vonn’s continued winning is adding fuel to her current desire – to race against the top men in her sport.

Women are currently not allowed to compete against men in downhill ski racing. However, the International Ski Federation is considering Vonn’s request and will decide whether to change the rules.

Grammar Feature: Semi Colon
A complete idea including an action and a subject (the thing doing the action or the thing being affected by the action) is called an independent clause. It is called “independent” because it makes complete sense when read on its own. The semi colon is a punctuation mark that can be used to show a close relationship between two independent clauses. For example,

The next record that Vonn may break is the most World Cup victories; she will need 63.”

Write three sentences that include semi colons. Why do you think a writer would want to tell the reader that two independent clauses are closely related?
