Students Win Prize For Making ‘Power Flour’ from Insects
A team of business students from McGill University in Montreal have won $1-million for developing a nutritious, low-cost food made from insects.
Their new “power flour” will help feed poor people around the world.
Every year, the Hult Prize Foundation holds a contest for college and university students. They challenge the students to find ways to help solve social or environmental problems by developing new products or new businesses.
The prize was awarded on September 23 in New York City by former U.S. president Bill Clinton. Clinton chose the theme of world hunger for this year’s contest.
Ahmad Ashkar, the founder of the Hult Prize, said almost a billion people go hungry every day.
The winning team, which calls itself Aspire Food Group, developed a plan for adding dried and ground-up insects to flour to make it more nutritious.
Canadian Government Urging Release Of Loubani And Greyson
Two Canadians—a doctor and a filmmaker—are being held in a jail in Egypt.
They have been there since Aug. 16.
Tarek Loubani and John Greyson have been told that they, along with about 600 others arrested in August, will be held for 45 more days.
On August 16, Loubani and Greyson witnessed a violent clash between Egyptian security forces and supporters of the country’s former president, Mohammed Morsi.
Dr. Loubani had travelled to Egypt to volunteer at a hospital. Greyson was there to make a short film about Loubani and his work.
When they saw the clash happen, they did what they do best: Dr. Loubani started treating the wounded and Greyson filmed the incident.

World’s Largest Volcano Discovered
What is the largest volcano on Earth? You may be surprised at the answer.
That’s because the world’s largest volcano has just been discovered–and it’s underwater.
The volcano Mauna Loa, in Hawaii, used to be thought of as the largest volcano in the world.
But scientists have discovered one that’s bigger. Much, much bigger.
Tamu Massif is a massive volcano about the size of the British Isles–or more than three times the size of New Brunswick.
Human Activity Responsible For Global Warming: UN Report
A group of scientists associated with the United Nations has just issued a report on “climate change.”
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has confirmed that human habits and activity is responsible for global warming and for higher sea levels.
If this continues, according to the report, there will be more dramatic changes in plant and animal life.
Some critics believe that the current situation is more likely due to short-term factors or weather cycles. They believe that the climate situation will change on its own eventually.
But the UN report says the reality is clear and the facts are there.
Luckily, because humans cause the problem, humans can help solve the problem.
The World Is Watching Syria
Countries around the world are trying to figure out what, if anything, to do about the situation in Syria.
The Middle Eastern country has been waging a civil war since 2011.
That’s when Syrians staged protests against the country’s leader, Bashar al-Assad.
al-Assad and his supporters fought violently against the protesters.
The two groups have been fighting ever since.
“Father Of South Africa” Nelson Mandela Responding Well To Treatment In Hospital
Nelson Mandela is responding well to treatment, according to his doctors.
Mandela is one of the most well-known and respected people in the world.
He is 94 years old and is in hospital, fighting a recurring lung infection.
Doctors say he is in serious but stable condition.
To many people around the world, Mandela is known as a great hero.
He fought for the freedom of blacks in South Africa.
During the 1950s until the late 1980s, South Africa was ruled by a relatively small number of white people. Black people, in the majority in the country, had few rights.
The separation of white people and black people** was known as “apartheid.”
Blacks were not allowed to be citizens, and were not given the same rights as white people. Services for black people were greatly inferior to those provided to white people. Black people were not allowed access to the best schools, hospitals, beaches or many other services to which the country’s white people had access.
Apartheid was denounced around the world, but South Africa’s government refused to change its policy.
Nelson Mandela, and people who followed him, wanted to change things.
Stores Near G8 Summit Location Getting Temporary Facelift
Some businesses in Northern Ireland are getting a facelift before some of the world’s most powerful leaders meet there later this month.
The G8 Summit will take place in Ireland, June 17 to 18.
The G8 Summit brings together the leaders of eight of the world’s wealthiest countries. They are: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK and the US. The European Union is also represented at the meeting.
More than 100 businesses in a small town called Belcoo have been “spruced up,” according to news agency Reuters.
Some businesses have been made more attractive with fake store fronts. Some ugly and crumbling buildings have been torn down. Others have been covered by huge billboards, according to Reuters.
The businesses are near a golf course where the G8 leaders will meet.
So instead of Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper or U.S. president Barack Obama seeing ugly storefronts, they’ll see posters of nice storefronts instead.
More than $3-million dollars have been spent by the government in Northern Ireland to make the villages look nicer.
At one store, which used to be a butcher’s shop but is now empty, colourful stickers have been put on the windows to make it look like it’s busy inside, Reuters reported.
World’s Oldest Person Also Last Living Man From The 19th Century
Jiroemon Kimura is the oldest living human being.
Kimura, who lives in western Japan, is 116 years old. He’s the last man alive who has lived in three different centuries.
The only other man who was alive before the 20th century (before the year 1901) was James Emmanuel Sisnett, who died last week at age 113.
Not only is Kimura the oldest man living right now, he is also the oldest man who has ever lived whose birth age can be verified. “Verified” means proved to be true. There are other men who have said they are older than 116, but there wasn’t any way to be certain of the truth.
Kimura worked for the post office until he was 65 and then farmed until he was 90.
He isn’t the only one in his family to live a long time: four of his siblings lived to be 90 or older and one of his brothers made it to age 100.
One of the strangest things about Kimura’s age is that his hometown of Kyotango, Japan, is reported to have 95 centenarians, even though the population of the whole city is just 60,000. “Centenarian” means “over the age of 100.”
