She won the leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party.

Since the Liberals are in power in the province, she will automatically become the premier as well.

Wynne’s closest competitor for the job was Sandra Pupatello.

The Liberals held a "leadership convention" to choose a new leader after Dalton McGuinty stepped down as leader and Ontario premier last October.

The convention was held on the weekend; Wynne was voted in on Saturday.

Liberal party members voted in Toronto, in three votes or "ballots." Wynne won in the third ballot with 1,150 votes over Pupatello, who had 866 votes.

Dalton McGuinty’s Sudden And Shocking Retirement As Ontario’s Premier https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/10/16/1-dalton-mcguintys-sudden-and-shocking-retirement-as-ontarios-premier/ Wed, 17 Oct 2012 02:30:41 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=7725 On Monday night, the Premier of Ontario did something surprising. He quit his job.

It was shocking, because most people didn’t see it coming.

Dalton McGuinty has been the Premier for nine years.

He is also the leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, a position he has held for 16 years.

At the same time as he resigned, he also “prorogued” the legislature. That means he stopped all business taking place in the Ontario House of Commons.

Most of the work MPPs were working on has been cancelled until a new session is called.

No one knows exactly why McGuinty quit, and so suddenly.

Some people say he intends to run for leader of the federal Liberal party—in other words, take over the national Liberals so he can run for Prime Minister in the future.

Other people say he quit because his provincial government is in the middle of many difficulties including contract negotiations with some unions.

Pharmacists In Ontario To Have An Increased Role https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/10/09/1-pharmacists-in-ontario-to-have-an-increased-role/ Wed, 10 Oct 2012 02:06:06 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=7612 When you’re sick, you go to the doctor.

She may give you a prescription for some medicine—for example, eye drops.

If you live in Ontario, you’d then go to a drug store and give that prescription to the pharmacist, who would “fill your prescription” – in other words, make up the eye drops and sell them to you.

As it is now, if you run out of your prescription eye drops and need more you would likely have to go back to your doctor to get another prescription.

This week the Ontario government announced a new plan that gives the pharmacist an expanded role in healthcare.

Many Ontario Teachers Withdraw From After-School Sports, Clubs https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/09/13/2-toronto-teachers-withdraw-from-after-school-sports-clubs/ https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/09/13/2-toronto-teachers-withdraw-from-after-school-sports-clubs/#comments Fri, 14 Sep 2012 01:00:36 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=7263 The kids at many elementary and high schools in Ontario may not be participating in after-school sports or clubs for awhile.

That's because the teachers who run the programs have been asked by their union to consider stop running them and to stop coaching.

Teachers in Ontario are part of a "labour union." A union is a group of workers who band together for a common goal.
