There were some surprising results in that election; some key Republicans lost their positions to Democrats.

The new governor, Ralph Northam, was elected on Nov. 7. He is a Democrat.

Republicans are currently in power in the United States; the president, Donald Trump, most of the leaders in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and most U.S. governors are Republican. The Democrats are the other major political party in the United States.

New Jersey Governor Embarrassed After Staff Member Caused Massive Traffic Jam https://teachingkidsnews.com/2014/01/12/1-chris-christie/ Mon, 13 Jan 2014 03:48:04 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=11997 The governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, has had a rough start to the new year.

He’s a man the Republican Party in the U.S. is hoping will become a candidate for President of the United States one day.

But what happened recently may have put an end to that hope.

It goes back to an incident that happened last September.

That month, there was a huge traffic jam on the George Washington Bridge, a bridge that links New York and New Jersey.

This wasn’t just any traffic jam.

Barack Obama Wins Second Term As President Of The United States https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/11/07/barack-obama-wins-second-term/ https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/11/07/barack-obama-wins-second-term/#comments Wed, 07 Nov 2012 09:33:36 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=7998 Barack Obama won yesterday's U.S. election, becoming the President of the United States for the second term in a row.

It was a close and hard-fought election.

In the end, Obama and his Democratic party won about 50 per cent of the popular vote, to rival Mitt Romney's approximately 49 per cent.

Obama comfortably won the "electoral college" votes he needed to retain his presidency.

By early Wednesday morning, with votes still trickling in, the Democrats had won 300 electoral college votes. Two hundred and seventy were needed (out of 538) to win the election.

Romney had 206 of the electoral college votes.

In the days leading up to the election, opinion polls in the U.S. showed Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama as neck-and-neck.

It wasn't clear who would win.
