Wounded Warriors Compete In Invictus Games in Toronto
More than 550 “wounded warriors” are gathered in Toronto, Ontario this week, to compete in the Invictus Games.
The competitors are soldiers who became injured during their military service. Many of them are missing a limb, for instance, and many others have PTSI which is a mental health condition caused by trauma.
Barbados To Get A New Head Of State
Barbados has announced that Queen Elizabeth II will no longer be the country’s head of state. Instead, a “ceremonial president” will replace her.
North American Lobsters Invading British Waters
Some unwelcome visitors from North America have been turning up in the waters off the coast of Great Britain.
North American lobsters have been found in lobster traps in the North Sea, far from their native habitat.
Future King Of England, Baby Prince George, Christened
The tiny heir to Britain’s throne had a big milestone event this week.
Prince George had his christening.
In this case, a christening is a religious Christian ceremony during which a baby is baptized with holy water.
The water used in the ceremony was from the River Jordan. The river has significance to Christians because it is where Jesus was baptized, according to the Bible.
The three-month-old son of Prince William and Kate Middleton is third in line to the British throne. In other words, he could one day be the King of England.
The ceremony took place in St. James’s Palace in England.
There were only 22 people at the christening, but they included some pretty big names.
The Queen was there, as well as the three other people who are next in line to claim her throne.
Prince Harry Spends A Night In A Giant Freezer
Britain’s Prince Harry spent a night in a giant freezer, to prepare himself for a race to the South Pole in November.
He will be doing the 15-day trek with a team of wounded British soldiers.
His team will compete against teams from the United States and the Commonwealth.
This week, the 29-year-old prince spent a day and nearly a whole night in the cold chamber, with the occasional 10-minute break.
AP reported that when asked what the worst part of his chilling experience was, the prince said, “Going in.”
Many Celeb Chefs’ Recipes Not Healthy: Study
Celebrity chefs serve up amazing food that tastes great and is good for you, right?
Research shows that most people believe that food created by famous chefs is generally healthy.
Well, maybe not.
Some researchers at Coventry University in Britain took a look at 904 recipes written by 26 celebrity chefs.
A celebrity chef is a chef who has become famous and popular—often because of they’re on a TV show or own a famous restaurant.
More than 85 per cent of the recipes the researchers tested “fell substantially short of the UK government’s healthy eating recommendations,” according to a media release on the Coventry University website. Most of the recipes called for ingredients that are known to contribute to health problems like obesity and heart disease.
Britain’s “Iron Lady” Dead At The Age Of 87
Margaret Thatcher was the Prime Minister of England from 1979 to 1990. That was the longest time for any British prime minister since the early 19th century.
Thatcher was Britain’s only female prime minister and she was considered an important leader around the world.
On Monday Thatcher died of a stroke; she was 87 years old.
When she was Prime Minister, Thatcher was considered by most people to be very strong-willed. Her nickname was “The Iron Lady.” Once when her own Conservative party members asked her to tone down her a hard decision, she said to them: ‘The lady’s not for turning.’
On the other hand, Thatcher had a vision for her country and she was loyal to it to the end.
She believed strongly in lowering government spending, letting private companies buy government agencies and letting companies compete with each other without government help.
When a terrorist bomb, meant for her, killed five people, she made a speech that evening telling her own party that the British would never give in to terrorism.
England’s Future Monarch To Be Born In 2013
The third person in line to the throne of England will be born in 2013.
The Royal Family announced this week that Kate Middleton and her husband, Prince William, are going to have a baby.
Prince William is Queen Elizabeth II’s grandson.
Kate, also known as the Duchess of Cambridge, married William in a lavish ceremony in London, England last year.
People around the world watched the royal wedding on TV.

Queen Elizabeth II is the queen of 54 Commonwealth countries. 16 of these countries are called Commonwealth Realm countries and Canada is one of them.
When Elizabeth steps down or dies, her son, Prince Charles will become King. If he steps down or dies, his first-born son, Prince William will become King–even though Princess Anne is the Queen’s only daughter and is next in age to Prince Charles.
In other words, because she is female, the crown wouldn’t go to Princess Anne.
Since the beginning of the British monarchy, men have been chosen first to become the next ruler.
A woman can only be chosen when there are no men in the monarch’s direct line, (like a brother or a brother’s sons).
That is how Elizabeth became queen. Her father, King George VI, had two daughters and no sons.
