It looks like a junkyard, but it isn’t. It’s a playground.
There’s also a fire pit, hammers and saws, and a rope swing across a creek. Some of the equipment can be dangerous, but the people who run the playground believe that letting children take some risks is good for them.
The Land was created by Claire Griffiths, who has two children of her own. She wanted to build a space where children could play the way they wanted and experiment with different things, without a lot of rules.

Rebuilding A Special Community Castle https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/10/21/3-rebuilding-a-castle/ https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/10/21/3-rebuilding-a-castle/#comments Mon, 22 Oct 2012 00:00:39 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=7596 Last March a fire all but destroyed a very special playground in Toronto.

The city's High Park children's castle had been lovingly built by volunteers. Its destruction resulted in an overwhelming community response--including a day-long community celebration.

Celebrity contractor, Mike Holmes, stepped in with his crew to offer to lead the rebuild--an elaborate new playground structure.

Holmes filmed the rebuild for his television show, Holmes Makes It Right. It's scheduled to air later this month.

The description for that episode reads:

When a beloved castle playground in Toronto’s High Park is damaged by fire, “Mike Holmes is fuming.

“He leads a legion of crewmembers, engineers, architects and firefighters into battle against extreme heat and construction challenges, all while the clock is ticking.

"With help from the community, Mike and his team overcome major setbacks to rebuild a brand new castle that's fit for any King or Queen, teaching kids that they can rise above any obstacle and build their own kingdoms.”

Mike Holmes To Help Rebuild High Park Children’s Castle https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/05/28/mike-holmes-to-help-rebuild-high-park-childrens-castle/ Tue, 29 May 2012 01:00:03 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=6730 The people who are rebuilding the High Park castle are getting some high-profile help.

Mike Holmes is a celebrity contractor. A contractor is someone who is skilled at the kinds of jobs needed to build or renovate homes. Contractors hire and oversee all of the work—for instance, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and design work.

Holmes became famous for his motto, “make it right.” On his TV show, he rescues homeowners from renovations that have gone wrong and he brings in workers who fix the house properly and “make it right.”

Holmes also does a lot of charity work. On one of his TV shows, he helps people in New Orleans whose houses were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Now he’s lending a hand to help rebuild the children’s play castle in the High Park neighbourhood of Toronto, Ont. Much of the wooden structure was destroyed by a fire last March.

High Park Residents Unite To Rebuild “Castle” https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/03/22/high-park-residents-unite-to-rebuild-castle/ https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/03/22/high-park-residents-unite-to-rebuild-castle/#comments Fri, 23 Mar 2012 02:00:56 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=5934 People in the community of High Park in Toronto have come together to rebuild a special playground there.

On March 17, an early-morning blaze destroyed a section of the castle-like wooden playground in the park.

Police and fire officials are investigating to find out the cause of the fire.

In the meantime, local residents and business owners are already actively planning and raising funds to rebuild the one-of-a-kind structure.

The Jamie Bell Adventure Playground, where the “castle” was, is in High Park, just north of Lake Ontario in Toronto.

It opened in 1999 and is named after a Toronto resident whose idea it was to build the unique playground.

Members of the community are pulling together again to rebuild the portions damaged by the fire.

And it’s not just local residents who have offered to assist; Canadian Tire has pledged a significant donation towards the project.
