New Rules Will Protect Clothing Makers https://teachingkidsnews.com/2014/01/29/2-new-rules-will-protect-clothing-makers/ Wed, 29 Jan 2014 23:58:03 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=12169 From now on, many companies that want to sell clothing to the Ontario government will have to provide the names of the people who made the clothing.

The names and addresses will be put onto a website so if anyone wants to check them, they can.

The new rules apply to companies selling more than $5,000 of clothing to the government.

If they do not give the information, they may not be allowed to sell the clothing.

Last year, unsafe workplaces in Asia made the news. In one incident, there was a fire in a clothing factory in Bangladesh.

It turned out that some Canadian companies were buying products from the Bangladesh factory even though it wasn’t a safe place. In other workplaces, reports came out about children in factories doing the work, which is against the law.

Philippines Hit By Massive Typhoon https://teachingkidsnews.com/2013/11/11/1-philippines-hit/ https://teachingkidsnews.com/2013/11/11/1-philippines-hit/#comments Tue, 12 Nov 2013 00:05:18 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=11514 There has been a terrible storm in the Philippines.

The Philippines is a country in southeast Asia.

Because it is an island in the Pacific Ocean, the Philippines often gets very bad weather, including earthquakes, volcanoes and typhoons.

However, Typhoon Haiyan is perhaps the worst natural disaster to ever befall the country.

The typhoon hit the Philippines last Friday.

Its winds of up to 300 kilometres an hour whipped up the ocean waves.

The storm also caused flooding and landslides.

The country’s National Red Cross has launched a huge program to help the people whose houses were destroyed by the typhoon.

Factory Conditions, Wages Improving In Bangladesh https://teachingkidsnews.com/2013/05/14/1-factory-conditions-wages-improving-in-bangladesh/ https://teachingkidsnews.com/2013/05/14/1-factory-conditions-wages-improving-in-bangladesh/#comments Tue, 14 May 2013 04:01:02 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=10385 Things appear to be changing for the better for people who work in clothing factories in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is a small country in south-east Asia.

About four million people there work in clothing factories, cutting and sewing clothes. A lot of the clothing they make is sold in stores in North America.

Most of the factory workers in Bangladesh earn much less than workers who do similar jobs in North America. Often they work long hours, and many of them work in unsafe conditions.

Recently there was an accident involving workers in a clothing factory near Bangladesh’s capital city, Dhaka. Many workers were injured or killed.
