Raptors Headed To Playoffs https://teachingkidsnews.com/2014/04/11/1-raptors-headed-playoffs/ Fri, 11 Apr 2014 04:12:44 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=12838 Canada's only basketball team in the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Toronto Raptors, are generating some excitement.

For the first time in six long years they have made the playoffs.

Of the 30 teams in the NBA, only 16 make it to the playoffs. There will be eight teams from the Eastern Conference and eight teams from the Western Conference. The Raptors play in the East.

In the playoffs, each team competes in a best-of-seven series. The first team to win four games moves on to the next round. A team has to win three rounds to make it to the finals. Then, the lone surviving team from the East plays the lone surviving team from the West.

NBA Star Donates $1-Million To Oklahoma Relief Efforts https://teachingkidsnews.com/2013/05/22/1-nba-star-donates-1-million-to-oklahoma-relief-efforts/ https://teachingkidsnews.com/2013/05/22/1-nba-star-donates-1-million-to-oklahoma-relief-efforts/#comments Thu, 23 May 2013 03:07:42 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=10497 To help his home city "bounce back" after a terrible storm, NBA player Kevin Durant has donated $1-million.

The number of people harmed by a recent tornado in the U.S. state of Oklahoma was greatly reduced, thanks to a special early-warning system.

On Monday, a major tornado hit Moore, a suburb of Oklahoma City.

A tornado is a violent storm that usually looks like a whirling funnel.

Residents were warned there was a big storm coming, and possibly a tornado, days before it arrived.

When it actually hit, sirens blared, giving people a 16-minute head start to find shelter.

All of those facts describe Collins.

Bryan Colangelo made a huge trade, to get superstar player Rudy Gay.

It all started back in 2006. At that time, Colangelo held the "number-one overall draft pick." That meant he could choose any eligible player and add them to his team.

He travelled around the world, looking for the perfect person to add to the Raptors.

There are 30 teams vying for the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, including Canada’s only professional basketball team, the Toronto Raptors.

The Raptors have a new-look team this season.

Three of the five Raptors’s starters this year weren’t with the team last year.

The Raptors’s starting lineup includes two players who have been on the team before: DeMar DeRozen and Andrea Bargnani.

The Raptors believe in DeRozen as a player.

They recently signed him to a four-year, $40-million contract extension.

A Great Time To Be A Sports Fan https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/04/12/a-great-time-to-be-a-sports-fan/ Thu, 12 Apr 2012 20:16:56 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=6197 There are exciting things happening in baseball, hockey, basketball, golf and soccer.

Major League Baseball (MLB) is just getting underway.

Every team is hoping to make it to the World Series in October.

But that’s about 150 games away.

The Blue Jays have a real shot at it this year, and that has some of the American teams nervous.

Will a Canadian team win against the Americans in “their” sport?

It’s happened before—in 1992 and 1993 when the Jays won the World Series. You never know!
