It was the 100th anniversary of the football championship that decides who takes the most important prize in the Canadian Football League -- the Grey Cup.

Across the country, and all over Toronto, Canadians were cheering for the Toronto Argonauts or the Calgary Stampeders.

At noon on Sunday, fans converged on Varsity Stadium in downtown Toronto for a "fan march," a big parade of Canadian football fans.

The Argos' mascot, Jason, bounced around the crowd giving people high-fives.

The Stampeders' mascot, Ralph, made his way through the mostly Toronto crowd.

But it didn't matter who you were rooting for--the real celebration was about the game itself.

"The only play is the next play," the coach for the Argos told his team before the big game.

At the same time, in the other dressing room, the coach for the Stampeders reminded his team that, "one word -- team -- is why we're here."

Selena and Justin — Why Do We Care? https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/11/15/1-selena-and-justin-why-do-we-care/ Fri, 16 Nov 2012 00:45:45 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=8132 Who knows what’s going on with Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez? Well, they do, for sure—but does anyone else?

Bieber is, of course, a famous teen pop idol and Gomez is a television actress; the couple has been dating on and off for the past couple of years.

But what do we really know about the couple?
\
That they had been dating. They have probably broken up.

It may have been her decision or it may have been his decision.

In other words, what do we know? Not much. Almost nothing, in fact.

Some media report one thing, some media report something completely different. Here’s why. It’s because the couple themselves aren’t talking about it.

Gomez? Isn’t talking.

Bieber? Isn’t talking.

Everyone else? Talking!

CUT! It’s A Wrap For TIFF 2012 https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/09/19/1-cut-its-a-wrap-for-tiff-2012/ Thu, 20 Sep 2012 01:32:46 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=7351 The 2012 Toronto International Film Festival ended last Sunday.

For 10 days, movies from more than 60 countries were shown around the city.

Thirty-eight of them were premieres, or films that were shown in Toronto for the first time. And all the big players--famous actors, directors and producers--came out to see them, and to be seen.

A film festival is an event about movies: watching movies, making movies and acting in movies. And of course, it’s about the business of movies. Many big movie deals are made during TIFF. Storytellers meet writers. Writers meet producers. Producers meet directors. Directors meet actors. And later--often years later--a movie is made

G’bye 2011, Hello 2012 (Year In Review, Part I) https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/01/08/gbye-2011-hello-2012-year-in-review-part-i/ Sun, 08 Jan 2012 23:04:57 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=4797 There were many fascinating news stories in 2011.

Today and tomorrow TKN takes a look at some of the most significant news stories from the past year.

Protests and dissent

The year 2011 may be known as the year of "dissent" - the year people protested. In a number of Arab countries -- including Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Syria and Libya -- people took to the streets to protest against their governments and many leaders were ousted.

It was known as the Arab Spring.

There were other protests closer to home. In North America and many other places around the world, young people rose up to protest the growing difference between the rich (the one per cent) and the rest (the 99 per cent).

Justin Bieber Is Home For The Holidays https://teachingkidsnews.com/2011/12/22/justin-bieber-is-home-for-the-holidays/ Fri, 23 Dec 2011 03:33:15 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=4772 Justin Bieber came home for the holidays on Wednesday night - to Canada.

The Stratford, Ont.-born teen idol spread plenty of good cheer while visiting Toronto.

One of the first things he did on arriving in the country was to hold a benefit concert and raise $500,000 for Bieber's Believe charity, for the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada, Sunnybrook Foundation and Project Medishare.

The concert, held at Toronto's historic Massey Hall, was taped for a TV special that aired on MuchMusic and CTV last night. It was called Justin Bieber: Home for the Holidays.
