What Is Harry Potter Up To Now?

Or more accurately… what is author J. K. Rowling up to?

The answer is: a mysterious new website called Pottermore.

A few weeks before the launch of the final Harry Potter movie (Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2), Rowling put up an intriguing website at www.pottermore.com.

She also began a Twitter account, twitter.com/pottermore, which has more than 75,000 followers.

It offers no clues as to what the website will be about.

It merely has the words “Pottermore” and “Coming soon…” with J. K. Rowling’s signature.

Scientists Discover Water On The Moon

Scientists recently found out there is 100 times more water on the moon than they thought there was.

Scientists discovered the water when they looked at some pieces of moon rock.

They found water in tiny samples of magma, which was trapped in crystal. Magma is a rock made from cooled lava.

Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield told Teaching Kids the News that the water is a very valuable discovery.

“It’s like finding diamonds or gold in a remote frontier,” Hadfield said.

The Stanley Cup Drops Out Of Vancouver’s Clutches

It was one game, winner-take-all.

And in the end, Boston took home the Stanley Cup.

There wasn’t an empty seat in the Rogers Arena in Vancouver. The hometown crowd waved “rally towels” as their Vancouver Canucks skated out for their warm-up. The thunderous cheering of the crowd never let up. Canuck Goaltender Roberto Luongo shifted from side to side in front of his net.

The crowd took up the singing of O Canada.

If Vancouver could bring the Cup back home, the game would go down in Canadian history.

But it wasn’t to be.

Nine-Year-Old Kids Pass University Math Exam

If you took a university math exam, how do you think you’d do?

Paula and Peter Imafidon are nine-year-old twins. They live in England, and last year they became the youngest people to ever pass Cambridge University’s advanced mathematics exam.

A reporter asked them how hard they had to work in order to pass the exam. Paula said she treats math like a game, so it’s not really “work” to her.

Peter said the exam had some questions that “may seem difficult but are very easy once you get in the swing of it.” Of course, Peter is speaking as someone to whom math comes very easy—the questions are very tough, especially for kids their age.

The family’s other children, Anne-Marie, Christiana and Samantha are also exceptionally good at math.

Last week, millions of people around the world said farewell to The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Oprah, one of the world’s best-known celebrities, aired the very last episode of her show on May 25.

The Oprah Winfrey Show was on TV every week day for 25 years. That is longer than most talk shows in the United States.

Oprah became famous as the host of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Her show aired in 145 countries, so she isn’t just famous in the U.S. and Canada.

Both celebrities and non-celebrities felt comfortable talking to Oprah, sometimes about emotional or difficult things.

Oprah spoke to ordinary people with interesting stories. She spoke to people who had overcome hard things in life, like accidents or unhappy families.

The Vesta Asteroid… Er, Planet… Er, Object?

When you want to know more about something, you check it out, right? That’s exactly what scientists at NASA are doing.

They want to know more about an object in space they call Vesta. Is it an asteroid? A planet? What exactly is it?

Two months ago, they launched the Dawn spacecraft. Its job is to orbit and observe Vesta.

Vesta is officially listed by NASA as a “minor planet,” which means that it is an object orbiting around the sun.

But Vesta isn’t really a planet at all. It’s simply an object in space.

It has also been called an asteroid, a dwarf planet (a tiny planet), and a protoplanet, which is an object that started the same way as other planets, like Venus and Mercury, but never fully developed.

Winnipeg Celebrates As Hockey Team Comes Home Again

Winnipeg will have an NHL hockey team again.

It hasn’t had its own team since 1996, when the Winnipeg Jets left town to become the Pheonix Coyotes. People in Winnipeg are celebrating.

This week, the NHL (National Hockey League) said they had reached a deal to move the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg. The team will play next season.

The announcement was made at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. (Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba.) As soon as it was made, thousands of people clapped and cheered. They also started singing “The Hockey Song,” a song made famous by Canadian singer Stompin’ Tom Connors. The song is a kind of “Canadian anthem” for hockey fans.

The Ugliest Couch In The World

The world’s ugliest couch is voted on each year by thousands of people across the world on a website called The Worldwide Ugly Couch Contest.

Each month, people send in photos of what they think is the ugliest couch they have ever seen. It could be plaid, stained, ripped, or simply an ugly colour. They might own it, it might belong to a friend, or they might have seen it in a movie or on television.

No matter what the couch looks like or where it’s from, if someone thinks it’s ugly they can send a picture of it to the Worldwide Ugly Couch Contest website.

From January to October, the best ugly couches are posted to the site, and anyone can vote on which they think is the ugliest. At the end of each month, the couch with the most votes is picked to represent that month in the Ugly Couch Contest. At the end of the year, an overall winner is selected.

Exercise + Learning = Better Test Scores

Combining exercise and school work may boost kids’ ability to learn, according to a new study.

Researchers looked at students in grades 1 to 6 in a school in South Carolina where students often didn’t do well on tests. They increased the children’s gym classes from 40 minutes a week to 40 minutes a day and changed their exercise programs so the kids were doing exercise and learning at the same time.

For instance, the kids in grades 1 and 2 hopped through ladders while naming the colours on each rung. Or they crawled across the floor, recognizing and calling out different shapes.

Young Detroit Tiger Pitches His Second
No-Hitter

Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers baseball team made one of the most impressive feats in sports recently. He pitched a “no-hitter” against the Toronto Blue Jays leading his team to a 9-0 victory.

Very few pitchers have ever thrown a no-hitter. It’s very difficult and very rare. But Verlander has now done it twice in his seven seasons playing baseball professionally.

The Milwaukee Brewers were the first victim of Verlander’s no-hitter back on June 12, 2007.

A no-hitter is when a pitcher doesn’t allow any hits from the opposing team’s 27 batters.

A “perfect game” is a pitcher’s ultimate goal, and it’s even better than a no-hitter. In a perfect game, none of the hitters the pitcher threw to reached first base. Verlander nearly pitched a perfect game against the Blue Jays, but he walked Blue Jays’ catcher, J.P. Arencibia right near the end of the game – in the eighth inning.
