It was a 7.5-magnitude earthquake. (That is how earthquakes are measured in terms of how bad they are. Seven point five is very big.)

The earthquake also caused a tsunami. That is a massive wave of water. When an earthquake happens on or near a large body of water, it can cause huge waves and flowing water that does a lot of damage. The earthquake in Indonesia was along the coast, near a city called Palu, which is on a bay.

Many people helped those who were affected by the disaster.

Large Storms Affecting Caribbean, US https://teachingkidsnews.com/2017/09/11/large-storms-affecting-caribbean-us/ https://teachingkidsnews.com/2017/09/11/large-storms-affecting-caribbean-us/#comments Mon, 11 Sep 2017 04:21:44 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=16349 Everyone is talking about Harvey, Irma, Jose and Katia.

They are the names of very large storms, affecting the area around the Caribbean*, Mexico and the southern United States.

Hurricanes are given names, like “Irma” to make it easier to refer to them.

People in these areas are used to dealing with storms. But these storms are much larger than normal. They have very high winds—up to 120 kilometres an hour—with lots of rain that can flood people’s houses and force them to leave the area. (In this case, leaving your home is known as “evacuating.”) In Florida, more than 6.4 million people have been told to evacuate before Irma gets there, according to a report from CBC News.

Philippines Hit By Massive Typhoon https://teachingkidsnews.com/2013/11/11/1-philippines-hit/ https://teachingkidsnews.com/2013/11/11/1-philippines-hit/#comments Tue, 12 Nov 2013 00:05:18 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=11514 There has been a terrible storm in the Philippines.

The Philippines is a country in southeast Asia.

Because it is an island in the Pacific Ocean, the Philippines often gets very bad weather, including earthquakes, volcanoes and typhoons.

However, Typhoon Haiyan is perhaps the worst natural disaster to ever befall the country.

The typhoon hit the Philippines last Friday.

Its winds of up to 300 kilometres an hour whipped up the ocean waves.

The storm also caused flooding and landslides.

The country’s National Red Cross has launched a huge program to help the people whose houses were destroyed by the typhoon.

Salvagers spent 19 hours—and more than $824-million—setting it upright.

It was the largest salvage operation of its kind.

The 13-deck Costa Concordia was carrying 4,200 people on Jan. 13, 2012 when its captain steered it too close to the shore.
