The Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl on Sunday, edging out the San Francisco 49ers.
The Super Bowl is professional football’s biggest and most important game.
Baltimore won 34 to 31.
Going into the Super Bowl, neither team was heavily favoured to win. However, by half-time the score was 21 to 6 for the Ravens.
At the beginning of the second half there was an interesting play. Jacoby Jones returned the opening kick-off for a 108-yard touchdown. It is tied for the longest kick-off return ever made.
(The 49ers kicked the ball to the back of the Ravens’s end zone. The Ravens’s Jones caught the ball and ran it all the way up the field, 108 yards, for a touchdown.)
Shortly after that, a different kind of history was made when half the power in the stadium–including lights and the scoreboard–went out. One half of the stadium had lights and the other half didn’t. Fortunately, the stadium overall was well lit and no one was injured. The power outage was caused by an electrical problem outside the stadium.
Play was delayed until the situation was fixed and the power came back on.
That delay helped the 49ers, who rallied in the second half. However, the Ravens managed to hang on to their lead and win the game.
Every Super Bowl has some unique elements and for this year’s big game in New Orleans it had to do with the coaches. The two head coaches of the teams that played are brothers.
The 49ers’s head coach is Jim Harbaugh; his brother, John Harbaugh, is the head coach of the Ravens. They are the first brothers ever to face off in the Super Bowl.
Another exciting story from this year’s game has to do with Ray Lewis. He is a superstar linebacker and Sunday’s game was the last one of his long and stellar career.
The Super Bowl’s half-time show is always a hot topic. Because so many people watch the Super Bowl, it attracts big stars for the extravaganza that plays half-way through the game. This year, performers included singer Beyoncé and her former band, Destiny’s Child.
