She stashed it in a zipper pocket in the arms of her old sofa. She felt it would be safe there.

And so it was, until one day when she was having some health problems and her family gave away the couch to a Salvation Army thrift shop.

New Jersey Governor Embarrassed After Staff Member Caused Massive Traffic Jam https://teachingkidsnews.com/2014/01/12/1-chris-christie/ Mon, 13 Jan 2014 03:48:04 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=11997 The governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, has had a rough start to the new year.

He’s a man the Republican Party in the U.S. is hoping will become a candidate for President of the United States one day.

But what happened recently may have put an end to that hope.

It goes back to an incident that happened last September.

That month, there was a huge traffic jam on the George Washington Bridge, a bridge that links New York and New Jersey.

This wasn’t just any traffic jam.

NYPD Officer’s Random Act Of Kindness Goes Viral https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/12/04/2-nypd-officers-random-act-of-kindness-goes-viral/ https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/12/04/2-nypd-officers-random-act-of-kindness-goes-viral/#comments Tue, 04 Dec 2012 04:44:11 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=8372 A tourist was visiting Times Square in New York when she witnessed a “random act of kindness” she—and thousands of other people—will never forget.

A homeless man was begging for change. He had no shoes or socks on, in the frigid November evening.

As the tourist, Jennifer Foster, watched, a New York police officer approached the man.

The policeman said, “I have these size 12 boots for you; they are all-weather. Let’s put them on and take care of you.”

NYC Marathon Cancelled In Aftermath Of Superstorm Sandy https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/11/04/1-nyc-marathon-cancelled-due-to-superstorm-sandy/ Mon, 05 Nov 2012 00:01:35 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=7946 Two days before this year’s New York City Marathon was to take place, it was cancelled.

The marathon is one of the largest in the world, with more than 47,500 runners, most of whom travel from out of town to the city for the 42.2-kilometre run.

The run was to have been held on Sunday.

New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg cancelled the event because New York was still trying to clean up after having been hit by a devastating storm.

Superstorm Sandy hit the Caribbean and the eastern coast of Canada and the United States last week.

It came onto land in New Jersey on the east coast of the U.S., on Monday, Oct. 29.

This year, some new changes made the year even more exciting than usual.

Major League Baseball (MLB) changed the way they choose who gets to be in the playoffs this year.

And with that new system, some teams were battling for a playoff position right down to their last game.

If You Lose Your Cell Phone The Finder Will Probably Snoop Through It https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/05/10/if-you-lose-your-cell-phone-the-finder-will-probably-snoop-through-it/ https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/05/10/if-you-lose-your-cell-phone-the-finder-will-probably-snoop-through-it/#comments Fri, 11 May 2012 02:42:34 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=6472 Some people at a software company wanted to find out what happens when people find a cell phone.

Do they keep it, or return it? What do they do with it?

They found out that half of the people people who find a cell phone returned it. However, in nearly every case, the “finder” first looked through the information on the phone, checking out the owner’s photos, emails and apps.

In his experiment, Scott Wright, who works for Security Perspectives Inc., left 50 cell phones in various places in five cities in Canada and the United States. He left them out so they would look like they had been accidentally lost.

The Giants Take The 2012 Super Bowl https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/02/06/the-giants-take-the-2012-super-bowl/ Mon, 06 Feb 2012 04:27:39 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=5226 Yesterday, The New York Giants and the New England Patriots faced off in the year's most important football game -- the Super Bowl.

The game was played in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The two teams had faced each other at the Super Bowl before, four years ago. And just like the game back in 2008, the Giants won.

The final score this year was New York Giants 21, New England Patriots 17.

It was a terrific contest between two great football teams, two fantastic coaches, and it was also a rematch between two great quarterbacks.

Sid The Kid Makes His Big Comeback https://teachingkidsnews.com/2011/11/22/sid-the-kid-makes-his-big-comeback/ https://teachingkidsnews.com/2011/11/22/sid-the-kid-makes-his-big-comeback/#comments Wed, 23 Nov 2011 01:45:51 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=4242 Canadians -- whether they were hockey fans or not -- were glued to their TV sets on Monday night.

One of the sport's greatest players was making his comeback.

Sidney Crosby had been off the ice since early January after suffering two blows that left him with a concussion.

On Tuesday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins's captain came back into the game. And boy, did he put on a show!

Crosby scored a goal in the first five-and-a-half minutes of the game against the New York Islanders, flipping a backhander over the glove of goaltender Anders Nilsson.

The Penguins ultimately won 5-0 against the lacklustre Islanders.

Crosby took home four points, with two assists and then another backhand goal in the third period.

Not bad for a guy who hadn't played in 10 months.
