The name Ziauddin Yousafzai may not be familiar to you. But you likely know his famous daughter.
Malala is known all over the world. She became famous in 2012 when she was injured by some people because she spoke out in favour of girls’ education.
Now her father is becoming famous for the same thing. He was in Vancouver last week telling people it is the right of every girl in the world to be able to have an education.
It is unusual for many fathers in Pakistan, where the family lived when Malala was injured, to speak out about their daughter’s education.
It is the tradition to pay more attention to education for boys than for girls. Many women grow up powerless because they are not allowed to attend school or even make major decisions for themselves.
Malala and her father now live in England, where Malala went for treatment after the attack.
Now she is better and they want to go back to Pakistan to work for girls’ education. Almost four million girls in Pakistan don’t attend school.
Ziauddin Yousafzai said in his speech that traditions need to change before discrimination against girls stops.
The attack on Malala has brought more attention to these traditions and now more organizations are working towards change.
