“Adventure” Playgrounds Can Build Confidence

At a place called The Land, in Wrexham, Wales, the ground is littered with pieces of wood, old tires, packing crates, and shopping carts. It looks like a junkyard, but it isn’t. It’s a playground.
There’s also a fire pit, hammers and saws, and a rope swing across a creek. Some of the equipment can be dangerous, but the people who run the playground believe that letting children take some risks is good for them.
The Land was created by Claire Griffiths, who has two children of her own. She wanted to build a space where children could play the way they wanted and experiment with different things, without a lot of rules.

School Board Bans Offensive Hallowe’en Costumes

In about a week, many children will be going out for Hallowe'en. They may also dress up on Oct. 31 at school.

One school board in Ontario has written up a list of guidelines for Hallowe'en costumes. They don't want anyone to be offended by what another child wears as their costume.

Lots of schools ask kids not to wear very scary costumes or ones that include toy weapons. The Conseil scolaire Viamonde (SCV), a French school board in Ontario, has taken things a step further. SCV runs 13 schools in Toronto.

The Viamonde school district asked parents to make sure their child doesn't come to school in a costume that "can make others feel upset, insulted or humiliated.

Malala Yousafzai Becomes Honourary Canadian

Malala Yousafzai has a message for Canadian kids: Don't wait, to make a difference. Just because you're young doesn't mean you can't be a leader.
Yousafzai is an activist for children's rights, and particularly the right for girls to get an education.
In this case, "activist" means that she tries to get that message out, no matter how difficult that may be for her.

Girl Scouts Selling Cookies Online

Most people are familiar with Girl Scouts (in the United States—"Girl Guides" in Canada) selling cookies in person.
But now in the US, they’re available online through a “Digital Cookie” website.
