Riots In Turkey Getting Worse https://teachingkidsnews.com/2013/06/04/1-riots-in-turkey-getting-worse/ Wed, 05 Jun 2013 02:08:40 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=10663 In Turkey, a country in eastern Europe, a huge protest has been taking place in the largest city, Istanbul.

It started last week when the government wanted to make over a main square, taking away trees and building a shopping mall.

It also planned to rebuild a historical building, a former Ottoman army barracks.

The Ottoman Empire was very strong in Turkey in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Unlike Arab Spring, when many Middle East countries erupted with protests against the government, Turkey’s government has always been seen around the world as more tolerant than many of those countries.

So when cause of the protests seemed to be a local problem, people thought is must be a very different kind of protest.

Eating Like They Do In The Mediterranean Is Good For Your Heart https://teachingkidsnews.com/2013/02/26/1-eating-like-they-do-in-the-mediterranean-is-good-for-your-heart/ Wed, 27 Feb 2013 03:30:53 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=9303 Eat like they do in the Mediterranean and you’ll live to a ripe, old age. Or at least a little longer than you might otherwise have done.

A new study has found that people who eat a Mediterranean diet are less likely to suffer heart-related problems like a heart attack or a stroke.

The Mediterranean region comprises the 18 countries, plus Portugal, that border the Mediterranean Sea. It includes Spain, Greece, Italy, France, Egypt, Israel and Turkey.

People there eat lots of extra-virgin olive oil and nuts as well as fruit, fish, chicken, wine, beans and salads. They tend not to eat a lot of baked goods or pastries.

PEN Gives Support To Jailed Writers In Turkey https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/11/21/1-pen-gives-support-to-jailed-writers-in-turkey/ Thu, 22 Nov 2012 02:41:55 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=8196 In some countries, people aren’t allowed to say anything bad about their government. They don’t have “freedom of expression.”

Some writers who have spoken out against their governments have been put in jail by those governments.

Fortunately, there is a group called PEN International, which defends freedom of expression. PEN International fights for the rights of writers around the world.

Last week, PEN International went to Turkey. The group was led by Canadian author John Ralson Saul, the president of PEN International.

They met with Turkish President Abdullah Gül to show their concern for writers and journalists in Turkish prisons.

PEN asked the Turkish government to consider shortening jail time for prisoners before their trials. This period can often last for years.

Another problem is that prisoners aren’t able to see their lawyers quickly. According to one report in The Toronto Star, one man has been kept from talking to his lawyer for over a year.
